Getting back into the swing of things

Today was our second Crossfit workout. (And by our, I mean the 4 of us). This was a pretty fun, and tiring WOD. We partnered up in teams of two, and then had to complete:

400m run
Air Squats
300m run
Push Ups
200m run
Kettle Bell Swings
100m run
Wall Balls

Each run and a movement had a time frame associated with it. After you and your partner ran the 400m, then you had the rest of 5 mintues to do Air Squats. The push ups was 4 minutes, kettlebell swings 3 minutes, and wall balls for the remainer of the 2 minutes. This was more fun than it sounds. I partnered with Sarah (David's wife). I debated on partnering with her or with Phoenix. I probably would have gotten a better workout with Phoenix (Sarah is not the best runner, and she had to walk for some of it...a lot more than I would have). The thing is, you couldn't start the movement until you both finished the run. So, I went a lot slower than I should have, but I didn't want to leave Sarah all by herself. I really want them to enjoy Crossfit, so, I chose to jog in place and wait for her to catch up to me. It also doesn't help that I am almost a foot taller than her, and I have much longer strides. Which is why it probably would have worked out better my partnering with Phoenix since we are both so much taller than Sarah and David...but oh well. :) I still had a great time. On the other three runs, I actually did run faster than her, I had to get some kind of workout in.

Hopefully they won't be so sore tomorrow, but we are having such a good time coming to CrossFit Deep! So, the plan is to come next week!

Oh....and Lindsey....so great seeing you!!!! I am so glad that you got to meet Phoenix!

I have missed this pain!

Hey everyone! I must say, that I have truely missed this type of pain. On Saturday, I took Phoenix and his two friends (Sarah and David) to experience the love of Crossfit. We went to Crossfit Deep (was hoping to see Koy and Lindsey, but they were probably taking a rest day). We did a really fun team workout. There was a 12 minute clock, and we had 3 different activities to do with a built in rest. One person would run, the other would rest, then wall ball, and then Kettlebell swings (I really did miss the KB swings!). The way the WOD was scored was you kept track of how many your team did for the KB and wall balls. Now, since I have been out of the crossfit style workout for a bit, I went lighter than I normally would have. I only used the 6# Wall ball, and the 18# KB. The run wasn't that bad. It was only 200m.

I think we scored around 391 or something like that. Not a fantastic score, but I was so proud of my people. One, they actually came to a crossfit workout. Two, they finished their first workout. And Three, they did not puke. Granted, they said that they felt like puking, but hey....who doesn't feel that way after crossfit sometimes? Sarah and Phoenix really enjoyed it, and I think that we will start becomming regulars at the free Saturday workout. I still don't have the money to commit to it sadly. :( However, I am very grateful for the free workouts and that Sarah wants to do it once a week with me. So, woo hoo for starting to become more regular! Granted, this means that I will have to give up my Saturday yoga....but I think I can live with that!

Personal life update: Phoenix was interviewing for a job in North Carolina, which would have made me depressed if he got it, however.....he was offered a job at this company in Irving. He is pretty sure that he is going to take it, which makes me very happy! The whole North Carolina thing has been looming over us, which has not let us become more serious or "official", so this should make things easier for us, and I can finally stop worrying if he is going to leave. Both jobs are a great opportunity for him, but the one in Irving just means that he doesn't have to move, which all of us like.

Diet after WOD yesterday: Well, thankfully, the 4 of us are pretty health conscious. (Granted, Phoenix and I still love the bad carbs...but we try to limit them.) We all went to Sarah and Davids, and had yummy scrambled eggs with chives and some kind of cheese. And Sarah made us some type of "paleo pancakes". (Sarah is actually doing the Paleo diet....she is already a crossfitter, just didn't know it yet). Anyway, the pancakes...wow....so good. I will have to get the recipe and post it. They were made with almond flour, ricotta cheese (not sure if that is actually paleo or not, but it worked), lemon, and an egg. (maybe there were more ingredients...I was in charge of making the eggs.) We topped them with strawberries and sugar free syrup. Yum.

Ok, all this talk about food is making me hungry! Guess I better go and wake Phoenix up and cook breakfast. We are PLANNING on coming to this Saturday's WOD...so, hopefully, we can repeat this amazing soreness all over again!

Flames Will Rise and Devour Me

WOD for 6-3-2009

"Fight Gone Bad"

Three rounds of:
Wall-ball, 10 pound ball,
Sumo deadlift high-pull, 45 pounds (Reps)
Box Jump, (Reps)
Push-press, 45 pounds (Reps)
Row (Calories)

I LOVE Fight Gone Bad! Seriously! 15 minutes of pure fun and work! First time I did FGB was over the Thanksgiving break last year. I finished with 224 reps. Then, I had used the 6# ball, and 35# for the Push Press and Sumo Deadlift High Pull. Now, I am doing the press and SDHP Rx'd. Box jumps...still a different story. I did 5 regular box jumps each round, and then switched to box steps. Still, a fantastic workout. I started on wall balls, and I think that's a pretty good strategy since this is my least favorite. Just go ahead and get it out of the way.

Round 1:
Wall Balls: 24
SDHP: 16
BJ: 20
PP: 17
Row: 11

Round 2:
Wall Balls: 20
SDHP: 14
BJ: 18
PP: 16
Row: 11

Round 3:
Wall Balls: 16
SDHP: 17
BJ: 22
PP: 17
Row: 10

Total: 249..new PR! Can't wait for the next FGB!

Diet for yesterday:
Breakfast: cheat meal, 2 biscuits and 2 pieces of bacon, 1/2c yogurt, 8 almonds
Lunch: Salad, spinach stuffed chicken, 12 almonds, 3 walnuts
Dinner: 4 slices of turkey, 5 walnuts, salad
Snack: strawberries and pecans
Total Water Intake: 2L

It Could Be Something In The Air

WOD for 3-30-2009

WOD #1 with Mel
800m run
Tabata Mash Up (Box Jumps & Wall Ball)
800m run

WOD #2:
Push Jerk
1-1-1-1-1

Tabata Mash-Up
Front Squat, 45 pounds
Ring Push-Ups

So, week one of 2 of days with Mel. I must admit, that when she told me this, I was nervous.....because if you know me, I hate running. And I had to do 2 800m? Granted, yeah, we did 4 400's last week, but for some reason this just seemed scarier! For the box jumps I used the big box, and did step ups. Averaged about 9 for each 20 second interval. Wall balls...such a different story. I began having sciatica (inflammation of the sciatic nerve) over the weekend. I finally got on a Medrol dose pack today, and by the time it was time for the workout, I was feeling better, but didn't want to aggrevate it. Ok, so back to the Wall Balls...I did 4 rounds with the 10# and 4 rounds with the 6#. The only reason I dropped to the 6# was I went too far foward and started to feel that sharp pain go down my thigh. Figured it was better to drop in weight than to stop. (Oh, and if my doctors found out that I was working out with sciatica, they would totally kick my butt.....but what can I say? I am addicted to CrossFit!!!)

WOD #2:
I have been looking forward to doing this for sooo long! I was eager to find my one rep max. Lindsey, Sandy and I warmed up with the 15# bar, and we were our own rack for a while! Lindsey and I eventually moved to a real rack with the guys! The one reps looked like this:
65-75-95-105 (f)-105!

That last one 105 looked UGLY! But I did it. Actually it wasn't that bad, I just needed to get a better Dip-Drive. The Tabata Mash Up was not fun at all! Those 8 rounds were never going to end, or so I thought....We did the weight as Rx'd...45# for the Front squat. We started off on parallete push ups, but after the first round, we went to knee push ups. That was hard! For the front squats, I got 5, (wrists were hurting after this but the weight wasn't that bad...)and for the push ups...my number for the parallete was 6, with the knee push ups my lowest was 8 and my highest was 11....push ups are getting better. And once my back gets back to 100%...everything will be great!

On an overall note....the 6PM class is amazing! Everyone there brings such intensity Even if we are not the best, we still get out there and give it everything we have. We leave everything we have there! Like the title says....It could be something in the air! This is a wonderful group of people, and I am so happy to be a part of it!

Diet for yesterday:
Breakfast: 2 slices of turkey bacon, 1/2c pineapple
Lunch: didn't eat
Dinner: 4 baked chicken strips, 5 almonds
Snack: grapes and peanuts
Total Water Intake: 1.5L
*Note about the diet and to why it wasn't very good...when my body doesn't feel well, I have no appetite, and I don't like forcing myself to eat. Water intake could have been better.

Here At The Top of The World

WOD for 3-25-2009

"Tabata Fight Gone Bad"
Complete 8 Tabata intervals (20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest) for each of the following:

Wall-Ball
Sumo-Deadlift-High-Pull
Box Jump
Push-Press
Row (calories)

WOW! This was an amazing workout! I loved it!! (Yeah...it does kinda suck in the middle of it...but oh well!) Workouts like this is why I continue to love coming to CrossFit every day. Granted, I loved "Fight Gone Bad" any way, but this might even be more fun! (If that is possible.)

I had some positive things on this workout. For the first time, I did a weight as prescribed! For the girls, the Rx weight was 45# for both Push-Press and Sumo-Deadlift-High-Pull. I managed to do both weights without a lot of difficulty! It is a great feeling that I am getting better, and seeing progress by being able to do some things Rx'd.

Box jumps are getting better. I am still using the small box. I started getting a shin splint during warm up....not fun...let me tell you! So, for the box jumps, I alternated between box jumps and step ups. Next time though....full Rx'd! No Subs (well, still might be using the small box, but for sure no step ups!)

Numbers for Tabata Fight Gone Bad:
Wall Ball: 63 using the 10# ball (Rx'd...last time I did FGB I used the 6#)
Push Press: 56 with 45# (Rx'd...last time I used 35#)
Box Jumps: 66 (1/2 jumps & 1/2 step ups)
Sumo-Deadlift-High-Pull: 60 (Rx'd...last I used 35#)
Row: 45
Total: 290

Ok, I did want to break 300 on this, but I will take the smaller victory by using the prescribed weight...one thing at time right?

Diet for Yesterday:
Breakfast: egg white omelet and bacon
Lunch: salad with baken chicken
Dinner: 3 slices of turkey, 7 almonds
Snack: blood orange, strawberries, blackberries, a few peanuts, 2 slices of turkey
Total Water Intake: 2L
